Remembering Our Children

Losing a child is the most emotionally complex loss that can happen to a family. Children are not supposed to go before their parents; nature did not intend it to happen that way. When it does happen a parent is left feeling many emotions, none of which are ever meant to be felt to the degree they are.

The stages of grief experienced can be quite acute such as a subtle reminder of the child can lead to an outburst of tears and subsequent feelings of despair that can last for days. Some days the feelings of guilt can be pretty heavy. Other days, you might think back of a fond memory and smile. There are even times when you negotiate to get your son or daughter back.

I still go to sleep at night hoping I wake up in the past so maybe I can do something to change what happened. Sometimes you can experience all of these emotions in one quick blur. Accepting what happened as it is feels nearly impossible but the experts say eventually you do come to a point where you can find joy in life again – you rebuild your life around the loss. Nobody should ever push you through the grief nor should you ever feel rushed. These feelings are important and must be felt for as long as it takes. There are no answers and there is no timeline. The only thing that other people can do is be there for you unconditionally because you are going to need that.

We understand that as well as anyone so we’ve created this place as a place you can feel secure – that offers understanding. If you feel like telling your story and uploading photos of your child by all means, that’s what this is here for. If you just feel like reading other stories and/or commenting on them, you are welcome to do that. We want to provide an outlet for others to come to that have either experienced a similar loss or would like to try to understand someone else's loss.
